I saw your comment on Rex's blog about Twitter and groups. I agree that groups would be great. In the interim, I've found two workarounds that suit my purposes . I use Twhirl (a desktop app for the Mac) that lets you simultaneously login to multiple Twitter accounts at once. You could also try turning on notifications for only a select group of people and then interacting with Twitter through IM/SMS but still check the site to interact with the greater Twitter community.
